IT Support Farnham: Christmas Could Be Slowing Your WiFi

IT Support Farnham: Christmas Could Be Slowing Your WiFi

As a leading provider of IT support Farnham, ensuring that our customers’ computers are running smoothly and efficiently is one of the top priorities to our team here at PurpleJelly. With Christmas fast approaching and the decoration of homes and places of business about to begin, we thought it would be a good idea to warn our customers of the potential negative effects that decorations – namely Christmas lights – may possibly have on your wifi.

A firm seasonal favourite, fairy lights can be seen almost everywhere at Christmas, and are still popular year-round in many people’s bedrooms. But are these festive lights causing interference to your wifi signal? IT support Farnham found the answer is yes according to communications regulator, Ofcom, and their newly released app (‘Wi-Fi Checker’) that measures the quality of local wireless internet signals, and can be used in both homes and businesses to test signal levels and offer suggestions as to how it might be improved.

So, just how are fairy lights causing disruption to wifi signals? Well, it’s all to do with electromagnetic radiation; wifi uses electromagnetic waves to communicate information between your router and computer, and anything that emits electromagnetic radiation can potentially disrupt this signal! However, this means that not just fairy lights are an issue, well, not any more than appliances such as microwaves, baby monitors and computer speakers! In fact, IT support Farnham found that pretty much anything placed in between your computer and wifi router can cause interference with the signal (though not necessarily of the electromagnetic variety) – even people can ‘absorb’ it to a certain extent!

So, is it time to take down the christmas lights if you value your wifi signal? Not necessarily! As said above, most things can cause some sort of wifi disruption, and fairy lights are actually no worse than TVs or speakers, though you may want to try and keep them as far away from the path between your router and computer as possible, just for the sake of speed!
