As a leading IT support Surrey based company, the team here at PurpleJelly are always keeping up with the latest IT news from around the UK so we can pass it on to our customers. Recently we were shocked by the facts and figures released alongside Home Secretary Theresa May’s call for the country’s police forces to have a technical overhaul.
Whilst speaking to the Police ICT Company’s suppliers on the 27th of January, Theresa May stated that too much was being spend on expensive and outdated systems that were lagging behind what police officers use in their free time, let alone what could be being utilised for crime. The facts and figures truly show how outdated the tech behind our law agencies is. The Metropolitan Police are currently using a thirty year old computer system that cannot be changed for a further three years.
With IT spending dependent on individual chief constables and police commissioners scattered across the country, the fragmented nature of police IT services is driving away suppliers. Theresa May admitted that most of these constables and commissioners have very little knowledge of IT. Yet a greater number of cases demand the services of those who can investigate digitally. The police are aiming to reach a point where all officers are trained to deal with digital investigation and evidence. However that seems a long way off if the police cannot reach faster solutions with their wary suppliers.
Theresa May added on a positive note, that the current government cut police IT spending from one billion pounds a year to six hundred million pounds a year. However is this cut really an achievement if the IT can’t deal with the constantly booming threat of cyber crime?
