Being Microsoft advocates, our team of IT professionals are always keeping up to date with the latest news regarding our preferred software company. One news story, which caught our eye this week, was the reports the US government trying to force Microsoft to turn over an individual customer’s emails that are stored on servers in Ireland.
The news story initially surfaced after Microsoft refused to hand over information due to their data being stored out side of the US, even after being issued a search warrant from the government. It is reported that a federal judge ruled that the software company had to surrender the emails to the American government, which Microsoft appealed.
This appeal has lead to many technology and media companies such as Apple and Amazon, as well as computer scientists and trade associations to sigh onto a 10 friend of the court brief’s on Microsoft’s behalf last Monday. Microsoft’s general council, Brad Smith, commented on the matter in a blog post that “Collectively these briefs make one conclusion unmistakably clear. This case involves not a narrow legal question, but a broad policy issue that is fundamental to the future of global technology.”
Microsoft is arguing that the U.S. government should respect international laws. If Microsoft did hand over the emails, it would do so without any input from the Irish government. It is suggested that this could result in a dangerous outcome due to the fact that although America has treaties in place with countries such as Ireland for situations such as these, what would stop other countries from following in the US’ footsteps?
What the main issue here for many Internet users around the world is the implications of privacy invasion, which has lead many people to speculate if they can trust software companies with their private data.
